PRODUCT REVIEW - LOW PROFILE 9.25" DIFF GUARD

From JasonB (Additional images from RamV)

When I heard Ron Pasch from Ron's Custom Shop had some new low profile diff guards for the 9.25" ChryCo axle, I had to have a look. I asked Ron to send one to me for testing. While I have not had it out in the rocks yet, it is a very stout guard. He offers it up in two versions, a standard 1/4" thick unit ($90) and a heavy duty 3/8" one ($95), which I received.

It arrives primered and ready for paint. It does not include any hardware, but it is easily found at the local hardware store. 12 bolts (and washers depending on bolt selection) are all you need, 5/16"-18 x 1" for the 3/8" unit. It also happens that Aaron (RamV) ordered up the same guard. We both opted to use cap bolts and grade 8 washers. Aaron opted to paint his to match his rig. I kept it simple with flat black.

There is some work involved with installing this guard though when using OEM style diff covers. This is becuase the OEM cover is stamped steel with a rolled lip. This lip needs to be ground off around the entire cover. You can attempt to grind it off while still mounted to the diff, as Aaron did, but I found that it is much easier on the back to remove the cover and stick it in your vise. It took me about an hour to grind it all off.

After painting both the cover and the guard, it is a simple bolt up, just like you would during a gear oil change.

The guard is a well built unit that, when bolted up, sits slightly off the cover providing room for the unit to deflect if you really hit something hard without contacting the cover. It protects the vital area directly in front of the ring gear as this is the most vulnerable area. If you are interested in wider, but slightly larger diff guards, Ron also offers his "Extreme" diff guards that cover the entire width of the diff housing with a "cage" style guard.

Ron also offers diff guards for nearly any axle, and if he doesn't, he can build it for you.
