HAND THROTTLE INSTALL

REQUIRED TOOLS
MATERIALS
(Check manual for types, amounts and applicability)
TIME
  1 - rear bike shift mechanism w/cable (make sure to get a rear because they are longer and you will need all the length you can get. It is better to trim later than not have enough.)
1- cable cover
1 - inch piece of 1/2" rubber hose
1 - linkage parts vary due to vehicle and motor
1 - cable set screw clamp (cable stop)

DISCLAIMER What I do to my truck might void your warranty or cause other problems that I may not list below. I am in no way saying that this is legal where you live and/or will your insurance cover your vehicle if this modification causes an accident if used on highways or roadways. Basically if you do this be aware that there may be dangers if used improperly. I do not recommend this to be used on any paved road when the vehicle is moving.

WHY I DID THIS. Well I did this because I have had to try and use the brake, clutch and gas pedal too many time on long hills and it is normally a pain. I did this also for those rough trails when your kidneys take a beating from your foot bouncing on the gas pedal, I have seen a ring and pinion destroyed from that. I also did this for winching and boosting, I can dial up my RPM and forget it. I just couldn't fork out the $30 US for the Rubicon express kit.

Here are the parts listed above, I also learned my camera does not work well for close up pictures sorry in advance.

Got all the above parts from a bike shop for $6 except for the cable stop I had in my tool box already as well as the throttle clip (lower right black piece). The other piece is a small black piece of plastic that I took of a car in the junkyard off the kickdown cable. You will be able to see it better in the following pics.

STEP 1. Okay to start take the piece of rubber and cut it open to get it to go over your shift lever. This is necessary for the bike gear shift lever to fit firmly in place. Once it is mounted then remove the upper shift boot and pull it away from your transmission shift lever so that you can get the cable and cover to fit threw it and push it threw the lower shift boot at this time as well. Once you have the bike lever mounted where you want it tighten it down and then remount the shift boot, after all the excess cable is fed threw you will need all you can get.

This is how it should look inside the truck after your done the last step. I have it mounted so that I can control the throttle with my finger tips with ease.

STEP 2. Okay now this is where you have to spend a bit of time to get the best fit and function for your vehicle. I had to remove my plastic intake and filter to make more room to work. You want to make sure that there will be NO BIND in any of the linkage when driving normally. The last thing you want to have happen is that your engine races away at full throttle if it sticks or worst when you pull up to a stop sign and your engine doesn't slow down. So take a while here and figure out what will work the best for you to ensure that doesn't happen. I got around this by using a piece of old carb linkage I had in the tool box. I also found a piece of plastic of the end of a kickdown cable from a car in the junk yard that I used to attach the cable to the throttle body without drilling.

Here is the throttle body mount piece from the car trimmed to fit (center of the picture). this is where a vehicle with Cruise would have ad the cable mounted. I also found that on the back side of the TB linkage that there was a stud so I found my old carb linkage came in had to attach for a non-slip attachment.

STEP 3. Okay the next picture shows the cable mounted to the TB (Throttle Body). before you mount the cable to the TB make sure that there is no kinks or binds that will hinder during the operation of the TB and clear of any other moving parts like your fan blade.

Okay now this is the part that if fun I had to drill out the cable stop so that I could get 2 cables threw it. Back at the top of the page you can see the piece in the parts picture of the linkage I made to get it to fit I then pushed the bike cable threw the cable stop along with the cable from the TB mount. This allows for you to tighten the cable if it ever gets loose it time. Max out the throttle buy hand and leave the set screw just tight enough to let it slide over the bike cable when you return the throttle back to idle position by hand. then tighten the cable stop down.

STEP 4. Now your ready for testing. Start the vehicle and test the throttle with your gas pedal MANY times to make sure there is not change in the way it should work. Also test the hand throttle a few times to make sure that you take out any slack in it and also see how little you need to bring your RPM up. You can see the excess in the cable. Leave it there to tighten the slack.

Now that your happy with everything trim the extra retighten the bike cable to get rid of any slack and trim all the excess cable but leave about an inch extra for to grab later if you ever have too.

AFTER USE. Now that I have used if out a few times here I love it. Is is so much nicer to winch when your not sitting on the gas pedal and when your climbing a hill and get bogged down and have to stop you can without touching the gas pedal down shift and carry on without moving back down the hill at all. I recommend the mod to anyone with a standard tranny or anyone that has a winch.
